Zurdo: GGG Didn’t Do Enough Against Canelo, Just Tried To Survive; It Was Kind of Sad For Fans

Gilberto Ramirez was just as disappointed as many boxing fans who felt that the third fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin was somewhat of a disappointment.

The 175-pound contender from Mexico praised his countryman Alvarez but had shorter words for the Kazakh puncher, who ended up losing a unanimous decision Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to end one of the historical rivalries of contemporary boxing. This time, unlike the first two fights, there was no controversy over the result. Alvarez, who successfully defended all four of his super middleweight titles, won 115-113 twice and 116-112, figures many observers believe were too generous to Golovkin.

“I think Canelo did well,” Ramirez told FightHype.com. “He did everything he could in the ring, but I don’t think GGG deserves to fight Canelo again because he didn’t. [do] enough. It was a bit sad for all the fans because they were expecting a fight like his first two fights. They expected something like that fight, but he (Golovkin) did nothing.”

The first fight between Álvarez and Golovkin, in 2017, ended in a controversial draw that many people believed Golovkin deserved to win. The second fight, in 2018, saw Alvarez win a competitive fight on the cards, but even then, some observers felt Golovkin deserved the nod.

The third fight on Saturday, however, was much less competitive. A noticeably quicker Alvarez controlled the action, while Golovkin was unable to drive his offense until the later rounds. By then the fight already had something of a routine.

“For me, he did well,” Ramírez said of Álvarez. “He pushed all the time and tried to win every round. That is all. Triple G, he didn’t do enough. He just tried to survive the whole fight.”

Ramirez (44-0, 30 KOs), a former 168 champion, is preparing for a big fight, a 175-pound title fight against WBA champion Dmitry Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) on the 5th. November in Abu Dhabi. .
