Yokasta Valle, Thi Thu Nhi Nguyen Make Weight For Historic Unification Bout In Costa Rica

Yokasta Valle and Thi Thu Nhi Nguyen easily made weight for their historic clash.

The pair of strawweight champions each weighed in at 104 pounds for their IBF/WBO title bout, marking the first unification bout to take place on Costa Rican soil. The scheduled ten-round bout headlines a Golden Boy DAZN Fight Night show Thursday night at Cuidad Deportiva Heiner Ugalde in Valle’s hometown of San Jose, Costa Rica.

Valle (25-2, 9KOs) attempts the sixth defense of the IBF title she claimed on the road in an August 2019 split decision victory over Joana Pastrana in Marbella, Spain. The 30-year-old from San Jose fought in her home region for her next six fights before making her United States debut in a ten-round win over Lorraine Villalobos in her most recent fight on June 11 at Anaheim, Calif.

The win over Villalobos came on top of a DAZN show presented by Golden Boy Promotions, who officially signed Valle in a co-promotional deal that was announced two days later. Valle is also promoted by MarvNation Promotions.

Nguyen (5-0, 1KO) will attempt the first defense of the WBO title. The 25-year-old from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam hit the road to reclaim the belt in a ten-round unanimous decision over Etsuko Tada last October in Ansan, South Korea. Thursday’s fight marks Nguyen’s first outside of Asia and the third in a row outside of his home country.
