Yoel Romero eyes middleweight division drop following Bellator Dublin clash with Melvin Manhoef

Ahead of his return at Bellator Dublin next Friday night, former UFC middleweight title challenger Yoel Romero has a return to the middleweight division in mind, once he passes Melvin Manhoef at 205. pounds.

Romero, who scored his first win under the Bellator banner in May at the co-main event of Bellator Paris, stopped Alex Polizzi at the light heavyweight limit with a buzzer-beating third-round knockout, fracturing Polizzi’s jaw. Polizzi in the process.

The Cuban-born veteran was scheduled to fight Surinamese striker Manhoef earlier this year, however the pairing was ultimately shelved with Romero now booked to fight the former in the Bellator Dublin co-main event next week. at the 3Arena in the Irish capital.

A career middleweight, the American Top Team staple confirmed his plans to drop a middleweight division after the fight with Manhoef next weekend.

“For me, it is a pleasure to fight in Dublin,” Yoel Romero told MMA Junkie. “It’s one of those places where people would love to put on a show. As for Melvin (Manhoef), I don’t think if I’m going to beat him easily or not. No. What I do think about is doing my job, putting into play what we’ve been practicing in camp and raising my hand in victory.”

“My goals remain the same, my ambitions remain the same: to be champion in both divisions,” explained Yoel Romero. “I am fighting at 205 in this fight and after this fight, I will lose some weight and go down to 185 pounds. Hang in there a little longer, don’t eat as much, and drop down to my old division, 185 pounds.”

Making his debut under the Scott Coker-led Bellator banner in September of last year, Romero suffered a split decision loss against former champion Phil Davis.

Throughout his professional career, Romero has scored pro wins over Derek Brunson, Brad Tavares, Tim Kennedy, Lyoto Machida, Ronaldo Souza, Chris Weidman and Luke Rockhold.
