Yann Sommer still on Erik ten Hag’s list as David de Gea replacement but not in January – Man United News And Transfer News

Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer will not join Manchester United in January.

BILD recently reported that Sommer was close to joining United and the deal is likely to move forward quickly.

Sommer, according to BILD, would enter as a direct replacement for David de Gea, whose contract with Old Trafford will not be extended.

Since the arrival of Erik ten Hag there have been big doubts about De Gea and his suitability for the Dutchman’s way of playing football.

De Gea has repeatedly shown his limitations when it comes to distributing the ball, playing with his feet and initiating sweeping actions like all modern goalkeepers do.

However, according to the reliable Florian Plettenberg, Sommer will not be joining the Red Devils at the turn of the year and any likely deals will have to wait until the summer.

At the end of the Bundesliga season, Sommer will be a free agent unless he signs a new contract with Mönchengladbach.

Therefore, United could hire their services for free.

Plettenberg says: “He won’t be joining Manchester United in the winter.

“But he is still a candidate for Manchester United in the summer of 2023, as we reported weeks ago.

“A contract extension at Borussia Mönchengladbach is not in style at the moment.”

The arrival of the Swiss footballer, especially on a free basis, would allow Ten Hag to spend his summer transfer budget on other priority positions such as a right-back, another midfielder and a striker.

The only downside to bringing in Sommer is that, at 33, he doesn’t represent a credible long-term situation. He is a year older than De Gea, which would force the club to return to the market after a limited time.
