Wrexham to play MLS teams in summer 2023 tour

Wrexham AFC co-owner Rob McElhenney recently proclaimed that he wanted the club to become ‘America’s team’. As a guest on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, the actor said there is a huge opportunity for the Welsh club in the United States.

“One of my intentions is to make Wrexham ‘Team USA’. I don’t know why we couldn’t do that,” said the actor and co-owner of the club.

“I know there is great support for a lot of Premier League clubs here in the US, but a lot of people have second teams anyway. Why not join the Wrexham America team?

Actor announces US summer tour

McElhenney also announced that Wrexham is scheduled for a summer tour of the United States during the interview. “Next year we’re going to tour some of the MLS teams, so it’s going to be fun,” the actor said.

Wrexham was supposed to take over for America last summer. However, scheduling problems forced the tour to be postponed. Instead, the Welsh club stayed in Europe to play their five pre-season friendlies.

Word of the announcement obviously traveled fast. Wrexham Rob’s popular podcast. Ryan. Red. Hosted by Nathan and Rich, he talked about how important the move is to the club.

“A US tour is planned and will take place, fingers crossed, next summer,” the hosts said. “Fantastic. Fantastic. What a boost that is for the international Reds as well. What a fantastic opportunity it is for Wrexham to build on this momentum and finally get to America.”

Complete calendar not yet published

An exact schedule for Wrexham’s tour has yet to be released. The aforementioned podcast hosts surmised that the Philadelphia Union, LAFC, Austin FC and Inter Miami might be involved, but it was pure speculation.

Another fan podcast, also recently claimed that Wrexham youth players were asked to update their passports. This could very well be preparations for the US tour.

Wrexham are currently second in the National League table. Their last league game was cancelled, but they will now face Scunthorpe in the FA Trophy on December 21.

The Welsh side hope to tour the US as a League Two side next summer.
