World Cup winner says Musiala ‘can be next Messi’ amid Liverpool links

Liverpool fans are hoping the links between the club and Bayern Munich jewel Jamal Musiala will remain strong after Lothar Matthaus dubbed the midfielder “the Messi of the future”.

The teenager came to Germany’s rescue in Qatar with the crucial assist for Niclas Fullkrug’s equalizer against Spain to keep up their World Cup hopes.

“He could be the Messi of the future, he’s excellent,” the World Cup winner told BBC Sport.

“I have loved him for the last two years, I love his style of football and I love his personality.

“He is 19 years old, he is doing the things that will make him a great footballer. He has a great pass, he’s smart with his thinking and he loves soccer.

“Musiala can be the next Messi because when Messi was 17, 18 years old, I met him for the first time when he played against Hungary. [the team Matthaus managed then] and was ejected after 40 seconds.

“He went out on the field and tried to show that he loves football, he has a passion for football. I’ve been a huge fan of his since two years ago, when he first broke through.”

Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg confirmed on Twitter in October that the youngster was being kept an eye on by the Merseysiders amongst a host of top-flight teams.

Much remains to be seen if Musiala will look for new pastures after the World Cup; if the reporter’s comments are of any use, he won’t be in a hurry to do so.

With a contract that won’t expire until 2026, the Bavarians will be more than comfortable with their chances of avoiding serious offers in the next summer window, and indeed the one after that.

However, with another exciting midfield prospect in Jude Bellingham (who the 12-goal star is friends with) expected to seek a new challenge in 2023, there’s no guarantee the German champions will be able to keep their prodigy star. for a significant period of time beyond that.

Depending on what our midfield situation looks like at the time, we certainly hope our recruiting team will seriously consider tossing our hat into the ring if Musiala’s services become available at a later date.
