World Cup to feature new advanced in-game stats on-screen

FIFA is ready to present new insights, metrics and performance data for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. These remarkable on-screen statistics will help provide more information to the television audience.

Starting with the 2022 World Cup, FIFA will collect and transmit this latest analytical data. These player and team stats include a more detailed look at possession, defensive high pressing rate and ball recovery.

The analytical program was spearheaded by FIFA’s Head of Global Football Development, Arsene Wenger. Wenger, who was previously Arsenal’s long-term manager, joined forces with FIFA in 2019. His role with the sport’s world governing body is essentially to drive the growth and development of football.

FIFA offers fans 11 new football statistics

Other statistical information soon to hit our television screens includes line breaks, final third innings, forced turnovers, pressures, expected goals, team form and phases of play.

FIFA has also created a website to help better explain each of the 11 new stats. Perhaps one of the most interesting analytical areas is the team’s form tracker. This will keep track of each player’s position on the pitch, both in and out of possession. Fans are usually given a team formation before each game, but that doesn’t always tell the full story.

Soccer fans can look forward to seeing the new statistics on their screens for the opening match of the tournament. The 2022 World Cup kicks off on Sunday, November 20 (see World Cup schedule).

Wenger claims new data will help viewers understand games

“We would like to share our vision of using soccer data analytics combined with interpretation from technical experts to create new soccer intelligence, enabling everyone to better understand the game,” Wenger said.

“Improved football intelligence will be our model for how we analyze football in the future. When we discover new knowledge, we want to share it with the world of football. With our FIFA Training Center online, we have a fantastic vehicle to do this.”

“My team will continue to provide new and insightful soccer analysis content to help share a new understanding of the game combined with performance data, video examples and technical explanations.”
