Wolves boss Lopetegui gets win in first game to sink Everton

Julen Lopetegui’s reign as the new manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers got off to the perfect start as his side pulled off a dramatic 2-1 win over a woeful Everton outfit in the 95th minute at Goodison Park.

This was Wolves’ first win in 5 Premier League games, one that will see them rise from the bottom of the table to 18th in the table.

Yerry Mina gave Everton the lead in the seventh minute with a header from Dwight Mcniel’s corner, but it was the away side who looked better as the game wore on.

Wolves level after Everton’s early goal

The Wolves achieved the tie in the 22nd minute after a corner of their own through Daniel Podence.

It was Ruben Neves who brought out Joao Moutinho on the edge of the box from the set piece, the latter who then found Podence with a wonderful lofted pass. The 27-year-old winger made no mistake with a brilliant shot just out of reach from Jordan Pickford into the Everton goal.

Frank Lampard’s side looked the better of the two teams going into the break and should have taken the lead had it not been for Wolves goalkeeper José Sa fending off Neil Maupay and Antony Gordon in quick succession.

However, the hosts looked far from their prime and hardly created anything after the break.

late drama

Wolves fought for the fight with their stoic defending and Lopetegui’s substitutions paid off as Rayan Ait-Nouri’s 95th-minute goal gave the traveling team all three points.

Adama Traore picked up the ball down the right flank and his cross found Ait-Nouri, who took a touch before moving past Pickford to give his side their third top-flight win of the season.

The house supports the booed coach Frank Lampard at the final whistle with his team flirting with the relegation zone. Everton have lost 21 Premier League games this year, the most in their history, surpassing 21 defeats in 1997 and 2005.

The Toffees narrowly escaped falling out of the Championship last season and currently sit 17th after a win from nine games and will take on reigning champions Manchester City at the Etihad on the final day of the year.

However, Wolves will be looking to build on their victory when they host Manchester United at home in 5 days’ time.
