Why it might be time for Thiago Silva to head to Brazil – Talk Chelsea

As of now, Thiago Silva will leave Chelsea in the summer, when his current contract at the club expires.

Again, for now (as things can always change), there is no talk of a new contract extension to retain the 39-year-old beyond the summer.

It’s certainly something that’s been discussed internally, but for now that’s it – we’ll have to wait and see if they decide to try and keep Silva or not.

There have been some conversations and debates on social media this week about whether Chelsea should keep Silva for another season, so I thought it would be interesting to see how everyone in this community feels about it and, at the same time, give my own opinion .

As we know, Silva’s boys play in the Chelsea youth team and I think they will be there for at least one more season. If Silva leaves, it will be necessary to make arrangements or change plans involving his boys.

Silva has the desire to continue his career in Brazil, where it all started for him with Fluminense. He also has the desire to dedicate himself to training.

I heard a while ago that Chelsea were interested in giving him a coaching role when he retires, so even if he ends up leaving the club in the summer, it may not be long before he returns once again in a different capacity.

His English is improving all the time and having Silva’s influence around Cobham would be a good thing. We’re getting ahead of ourselves anyway, there’s a little way to go until then and a few more curves for him to take.

Silva is now free to discuss his next move starting this month, and could even agree on his next move starting now. But should Chelsea try to keep him?

He will turn 40 in September, but he is still one of Chelsea’s most important players, and the way he looks after himself I don’t think his levels will really drop.

Mauricio Pochettino picks him and trusts him, and I just picked him as my 2023 player, as did most of you here.

For me, I think the time is right for Chelsea and Silva to part ways in the summer. I don’t disagree that he can continue to perform at this level and continue to be a great asset and a rare leader on this team, but I think it’s the right time to say goodbye (for now) to Silva.

I would absolutely hate to see it become another Branislav Ivanovic or even César Azpilicueta situation where their decline caused the fans to turn against them and their end at the club wasn’t as happy as it should be. Who knows if Silva will decline like they did, but it is possible.

In fact, we’ve already seen it, haven’t we? Fans are turning against Silva this season and last.

I still think he’s an excellent defender and he’s single-handedly kept us in a lot of games this season. We are short on leaders, so to say that he would let a leader go this summer is quite difficult to say and a bit contradictory. In fact, I even think he should wear the captain’s armband this season.

But I want the best for Silva and the best for Chelsea, and I think we should try to move forward without Silva. But I would replace him with a similar profile who is also a leader, but a younger leader. I don’t think we should rely on a 39 year old man week in and week out, I think we should move forward with this project and build our team around the new era.

Silva still wants to play and finish his career in Brazil, and I think he needs to do it this summer in order to be at his best.

I must say that this is not a decision that came as easy to me as I said 3 or 4 months ago. It’s certainly not that simple for me anymore, but I think the time is right.
