The victory for the USA, along with England’s victory in their game against Wales, means the USA finished in second place in Group B. That positioning sets the USA up with a clash against the Netherlands on Saturday at 10:00 am ET in the round of 16 this weekend.
The USA last played in the knockout round in their previous World Cup appearance, at Brazil 2014. That year, they lost to Belgium in the round of 16. They fell in the same round in 2010 in South Africa, losing 2-1 to Ghana after extra time after a memorable last-minute performance in their final group game. The furthest the United States has advanced in modern times was in 2002, when it reached the quarterfinals, narrowly losing to Germany 1-0 after defeating rivals Mexico 2-0 in the round of 16.
With a knockout round game airing on a weekend, the first game of the 2022 tournament outside of US weekdays is sure to be a massive event across the country, with soccer fans gathering to take part. on the action.
