Weston McKennie: Precisely the sort of player Tottenham do not need

A recurring problem with Spurs transfer rumors is the desperate desire to present players as fabulous, impressive, and generally box office sensations have outpaced honest reporting. The business we’re in is generating as much traffic as possible, and to hell with the consequences. Look no further than poor Emerson Royal, who was billed as a Barcelona star. The poor guy barely played for them and is fast approaching a point where fans boo him on sight.

Weston McKennie is one of several tepid names linked with a Spurs move, and yesterday we finally got a taste of the USA star man. According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Spurs are interested in signing the midfielder from Juventus. The Old Lady could try to sell the US midfielder for around €25-30m in January. This would put the Juve ace in line with what the Lilywhites paid for Royal.

Then there’s the question of where Conte could play this guy. Do we really need another holding midfielder? Using WhoScored’s ready calculation, the answer appears to be a solid ‘no thanks’, with the American offering less than Bentancur. Tottenham, or rather, Daniel Levy needs to stop taking clearances and invest before Antonio Conte loses the will to continue.

This brings me to another pet hate. Please stop saying, if Conte wants it, that’s good enough for me and his variations. There’s only one man who makes the calls at THFC, and he’s the only man you need to worry about.

McKennie is not good enough in any way. Unless, of course, one’s ambitions are for Conte to step down, Southgate to take over, and misery to continue at the same chaotic pace. Stop looking at mid-priced mediocrity.
