It was the game that gave us arguably the most well-known (main image) college football surrender cobra of all time, the battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy. Of course, it’s Michigan State vs. Michigan in a Big Ten East battle for the ages. The rivalry dates back more than a century, but Michigan is hoping to end the Spartans’ two-game winning streak this year. We take a look at the odds and offer our picks and predictions for this big week nine NCAA football matchup.

Spartans looking for a big upset victory

The undefeated Michigan Wolverines host rival Michigan State on Saturday as the Spartans try to play spoiler on Michigan’s CFP offer. Michigan is currently 7-0 and the fourth-ranked team in college football. Fresh off a bye, the Wolverines will be eager to assert their dominance over their rivals and keep the bid for a playoff spot alive.

Sportsbooks believe Michigan is a favorite for this one. They are massive odds on moneyline favorites while giving up 22.5 points on the spread. The total point line for the game is set at a reasonable 55 points.

The 3-4 Michigan State Spartans stopped the rot with an overtime win over Wisconsin last time out. Before that, they were on a four-fight losing streak and struggling to make it all work. Fresh from a bye, like their opponents, the Spartans will be looking to pull off a big upset, but they always step up their game in the battle for the Paul Runyan Trophy.

How will this game be decided?

Heart. It’s as simple as that, really. Michigan State will have to play with a lot of heart if it wants to get close to Michigan on Saturday. The talent gap is a bit too much to bridge without her.

Matchups for Spartans are ugly no matter where you look. Michigan will likely look to running back Blake Corum to lead the attack again. Corum is an outright unit and leads the NCAA in rushing touchdowns so far this year.

Over their last three games, MSU has given up 4.7 yards per carry and that could get uglier tomorrow. Corum is going 6.2 yards per carry and is hoping to crush this Spartans defense on Saturday.

Michigan QB JJ McCarthy (pictured above) will also be pleased to see that the matchups for his wide receivers are also positive. Everywhere we look on this side of the ball, they’re all Wolverines.

However, the one area we can’t explain is what’s inside the chest of those Spartan players. That has the ability to blow up the best player algorithms and models.

That’s what an MSU fan would say anyway, we’re not buying it. It’s going to be tough for them to move the ball in this Wolverines unit and they won’t be stopped all day. Load up in Michigan and let’s go.
