Unbeaten Japanese WBA#15 prospect, light flyweight Kanamu Sakama (9-0, 8 KOs), 108.75, withstood the initial attacks of Filipino puncher John Paul Gabunilas (10-3, 7 KOs), 107.25, and finally stopped him with the referee’s decision. Intervention at 2:35 of the fifth round in a scheduled eighth under the Inoue-Tapales undisputed unification fight on Tuesday in Tokyo, Japan. Gabunilas bounced back from a shocking first-round loss to Miel Fajardo in an OPBF title fight for the vacant 108-pound belt in August, but was unable to grace his first appearance here in Japan.
