Van Dijk sends plea to Liverpool fans and teammates ahead of Ajax clash

Virgil van Dijk has called for unity between the team and the fans ahead of the club’s next Champions League clash in mid-September, where the Reds host Ajax at Anfield.

The former Southampton player remains confident the club can work its way past the doubts surrounding the club’s poor form of late, all made worse by a humiliating 4-1 loss at Napoli.

“The situation is as it is. The next Champions League game will be Ajax at home and we need the fans, we need a good performance from us,” the Dutchman told the club’s official website.

“Obviously it starts Saturday with a good chance against a good team as well, so we’ll give it our all.

“What I said, the key is to be together. We need everyone.

“If you start blaming others and don’t look at yourself or create negativity in the club, then you’re not going to get out of this. I fully trust that together we will turn this around.”

A clash with Wolves awaits the Merseysiders first, a chance to make amends in front of the home crowd and hopefully show some of the fight and courage that has been in short supply in the team’s opening run of matches.

There is reason for optimism within the general improvement we enjoyed on the pitch after Thiago Alcantara came on in the second half of the action.

Still, the cold reality remains that it is far from ideal for Liverpool’s midfield and performances to be dependent on the availability of a brilliant, albeit injury-prone, option.

In theory, the arrival of Arthur Melo could provide some much-needed cover in that regard once he is fully up to speed with the demands of Klopp’s system and, more importantly, adjusts to the match.

In the meantime, however, such performances will continue to raise questions about a possible lack of foresight during the summer transfer window.
