Van der Vaart brands three Liverpool stars average: ‘I think we have become a bit blinded’

Jordan Henderson’s quality has often been criticized given the midfielder’s proximity to the world-class players in the Liverpool squad.

Rafael van der Vaart is the latest pundit to question the Reds captain, suggesting the Englishman, Joe Gomez and James Milner are all average players.

“I think we have become a little blind. We suddenly think Jordan Henderson is a crazy player,” the former Tottenham man told VI.NL (via HITC). “That is a very normal player. James Milner is also a very normal player. Joe Gomez is also a very normal player.”

While we can agree that, on a technical level, the former Sunderland man is outclassed by the likes of Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara, it is unfair to suggest that he has been anything but a brilliant player for Jurgen Klopp.

Lifting the Premier League and Champions League titles, amongst a host of trophies the former being something a Liverpool captain hadn’t achieved for three decades, it’s clear the England international had more to say in our success at field.

Similarly, we find it hard to understand the criticism leveled at Gomez’s path as our title-winning center back partner by Virgil van Dijk and James Milner, who, to be fair, is now 36.

At his best, the former is undoubtedly a world-class centre-half, while James Milner has been another key role model and a versatile option moved where Klopp needed him after his move from Manchester City.
