US Soccer removes images that supported Iran protests

US Soccer got into a political firestorm this weekend when it was revealed that it had released images earlier this weekend of the flag of Iran with the symbol of the Islamic Republic removed. A US Soccer spokesperson said it was a move to “show support for women in Iran who are fighting for basic human rights.”

However, several media outlets publicly pointed this out, sparking considerable anger among Iranian officials. Just hours later, the US Soccer social media account removed all images showing the controversial flag. After that, that included the official Iranian flag.

US Soccer’s tweet at the center of controversy

“We wanted to show our support for women in Iran with our graphic for 24 hours,” the federation told ESPN.

US Soccer plays with fire

The controversy arises from the use of an earlier version of the Iranian flag with the colors green, white and red. The emblem of the Islamic Republic was missing in what is presented as a statement of support for the protesters against the current ruling regime.

All of this controversy comes ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup game between the United States and Iran. If the US wins, they advance to the next round. Iran only need a draw to advance if Wales fail to beat England.

Iran has been in the spotlight following months of protests after 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in police custody. Mahsa was arrested allegedly for failing to comply with the country’s strict dress code for women.

Following his death, more than 400 protesters have been killed and more than 18,000 arrested, as the government has tried to suppress the movement. Several nations have expressed their support for the cause of the protesters and have called for changing the current regime in the country.

Iran World Cup matches so far

Amid adversity and chaos at home, Iran started the World Cup in disastrous fashion, losing 6-2 to England in their opening game. However, the Asian side beat Wales on Friday with two late goals to keep their World Cup hopes alive. They currently sit second in Pool B and will take on the US Men’s National Team on Tuesday, a matchup that will transcend beyond the court.

A draw for Iran could guarantee them a place in the round of 16 if Wales fail to beat England, while the USA must win to have any hope of qualifying. The countries have been diplomatic rivals for more than 40 years and there is no doubt that either side will try to outdo each other in this high-stakes, winner-take-all clash.
