Question marks continue to crop up around Darwin Nunez’s inaugural campaign in English football, continuing to emerge beyond the World Cup in light of the Uruguayan’s struggles to find the back of the net.
However, his Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold confirmed his delight with the striker’s performances, crediting him with ‘really, really hurting the opposition’.
“People will judge him by his goals and that’s part of being a striker, it’s part of life. But I think he can continue to come off the pitch with his head held high because he is getting into positions that are really hurting the opposition,” the 24-year-old told the club’s official website.
“He’s a great threat, he’s getting behind, he’s holding the ball, he’s shooting balls, he’s doing everything the coach has asked of him. His pressure, his attitude, his desire, you can’t question any of it.
“There will be people who will say that he missed some chances and missed one-on-ones and maybe he should have hidden the second goal, but he is getting into those positions and when the goals come, I’m sure.” They’ll come like London buses! We’re waiting for that, but he’s a fantastic guy and he’s an outstanding player as well.”
The Merseysiders no doubt benefited from the 23-year-old’s chaotic movement in and around the box in his first two league games after the Qatar-based tournament.

Truth be told, Nunez should perhaps have at least a couple of goals to his name after encounters with Aston Villa and Leicester City, but his industry has been impeccable.
It was the linking job with Mo Salah up the forward line that drew particular attention against the Foxes, providing the Egyptian international at least one clear chance that should also have been buried beyond Danny Ward.
Very similar to our number 11: we have no doubt that the goals will start flowing again, forcing the critics to abandon arguments built on pillars of clean goals.
