Tottenham Hotspur Wants to resign Their Former Youth Academy in January

Tottenham Hotspur have shown interest in bringing back their former youth academy player Dennis Cirkin.

Cirkin left Spurs last year for Sunderland for an undisclosed fee and has impressed his former club since moving into the Championship side.

The 20-year-old prefers to play as a left-back, but can also play as a centre-back over time.

According to The Sun, Spurs are keen to bring the defender back after just a year on sale, which has caught most fans by surprise.

Having left Tottenham Hotspur in 2021, the England Under-20 player has established himself as a key player for Sunderland. He missed a few games due to injury. But he is now in top shape to participate in the championship games.

Reports suggest the Spurs may waive him in January. This move may be surprising, but there may be another reason behind it. Former Tottenham Hotspur manager José Mourinho has previously described him as a player with “a lot of quality”. But Conte sold it when the defender was only 19 years old. They may want to sign Dublin-born Cirkin to sell them again for a better price to any rival Sunderland club.

The defender appeared on the Spurs first-team bench five times between 2019 and 2021. Since his signing, the English defender has made 49 appearances for the Black Cats with no goals but two assists.

Cirkin has hosted the first eight championship games this season. The left-back suits Conte’s system well, as he plays in a three-man formation for Sunderland. After returning to form, the Englishman appeared on the bench in a 2-1 loss against Swansea on Saturday.

He is expected to make his first-team return at home against Wigan at the Stadium of Light in the next Championship match. Reports suggest that Spurs are considering triggering the £6m buyback clause in Dennis Cirkin’s contract.

When Cirkin moved to the EFL League for one, he spoke of his move as “perfect”. He spoke: “I’m delighted to be here, as soon as I got interested in Sunderland it was a no-brainer – the fans, the stadium, the history – and I thought the club was perfect for me.”

He was very optimistic that he could develop his career at the new club. Antonio Conte bought the experienced Ivan Perisic on a free transfer this summer.

But Conte is looking for a long-term replacement as the Croat is 33 years old. Only time can tell whether Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Cirkin for sale or use him as a much-needed left central defender.
