Tottenham Hotspur have a bad reputation for underspending, but that’s not entirely true. The Spurs spent a huge fortune on Daniel Levy to build an advanced training facility.
They also spent a lot on players to guarantee their top 6 each season. His evolution is remarkable to get some of the best stars in the history of the English Premier League.
But all of them are not so successful. Some players disappointed fans in North London. Their spending also helped them reach the Champions League final under Mauricio Pochettino in the 2018-19 season.
Since then, they were unable to improve their squad until recently. This summer they surprised their fans by spending around £172 million. But unlike other Big 5 clubs, they have crossed the £50m mark only twice with Tanguy Ndombele and Richarlison. So far, Daniel Levy’s strategy has helped Tottenham Hotspur become a major threat in European football. They spend on the right players for less money than other English clubs and yet have achieved the consistency to qualify for Europe.
Paratici’s first big signing
Antonio Conte’s team is currently third in the table of positions competing against Arsenal and Manchester City this season with only 4 points difference with the league leader.
The three most successful signings from Tottenham Hotspur are Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and Son Heung Min. But today, let’s take a look at some of the North Londoners’ most expensive signings.
After joining Spurs last summer, Fabio Paratici’s first big summer signing was Christian Romero. It was an update of the existing Davidson Sánchez and others. Tottenham signed him on loan last summer with the option to make his move permanent.
With Conte, he was an impressive defender. He joined North Londoners permanently this summer on a permanent deal worth £45m. The Argentine international signed a contract that will last until 2027.
Richarlison of Everton
After helping Everton survive relegation last year, Richarlison joined Spurs for £52.50m this summer. He is now the second most expensive signing in the club’s history.
Unlike Ndombele, the Brazilian international has become an integral part of Conte’s squad this season. He has appeared in every major Spurs game. He also scored twice on his Champions League debut against Marseille in September.
Tottenham Hotspur’s biggest flop
Ndombele joined Tottenham Hotspur for £54m in 2019 as the most expensive transfer in the club’s history. He was the subject of interest for many European clubs. But sadly, he couldn’t cope with Premier League football.
After Conte’s arrival, he left the club for Lyon on loan in 2022. This season, he joined Napoli on loan with a €30m purchase option to make his move permanent.
Other big signings are Davinson Sanchez for £37.80m, Moussa Sissoko for £31.50m, Giovani Lo Celso for £28.80m and Steven Bergwijn for £27m, respectively. These signings conclude that Tottenham Hotspur have spent £1.4bn on incoming transfers over the last 22 years.
