Tony Curtis, Trained By Roy Jones, To Turn Pro in Cancun, Mexico

Add another fighter who is being trained by Roy Jones, Jr.

Tony Curtis will make his professional debut against Javier Pérez Calderón (1-3) of Mexico City tonight at the Grand Oasis Arena in Cancun, Mexico. The four-round fight will open the ProBox TV telecast (9 pm ET/ 6 pm PT).

Curtis, 16, who lives in London, England, has so far impressed with Jones, the former three-division world champion.

“Tony only had 10 amateur fights,” Jones said earlier this week. “He is from the United Kingdom (UK). He already has such a professional style (that he) he no longer needed to fight as (an) amateur. Here we are.”

Jones won world title belts at super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight.

Jones currently trains the likes of middleweight contender Chris Eubank, Jr. and welterweight prospect Michael Williams, Jr.

It is not uncommon for young wrestlers to turn pro or fight in Mexico. The current minimum age to fight professionally in Mexico is 16, but some fighters turned pro as young as 15.

In the main event, undefeated junior featherweight Christopher Lopez (15-0-1, 10 KOs) of Guadalajara, Mexico will take on Alejandro Diaz (11-4-2, 6 KOs) of Mexico City in a bout. to 10 rounds.

The card is a co-promotion between Marquez Promotions, run by former world champion Juan Manuel Marquez, and Cancun Boxing.
