Thiago Silva can help Chelsea to buy time for Gvardiol transfer

English Premier League giants Chelsea are interested in bringing Croatian sensation Josko Gvardiol to Stamford Bridge.

Last summer, they tried to reach a deal with RB Leipzig but were unsuccessful in their pursuit of the Croat.

Gavardiol then signed a contract extension with Leipzig, making things more difficult for the London-based team. Chelsea then brought in three defenders Kalidou Koulibally, Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella to bolster their defence.

However, despite that, they still like Croatian and want to move around it in the recent future. But after his contract renewal, his transfer to Stamford Bridge next summer looks very complex. Then Chelsea can use one of their veterans to buy Josko Gvardiol some transfer time. The veteran in question here is none other than Brazilian international Thiago Silva.

How can Thiago Silva help Chelsea?

Thiago Silva joined Chelsea from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2020. Despite many people questioning the need for the move due to his age, Silva soon became an important part of the Chelsea team.

When Thomas Tuchel joined Chelsea, Silva became the Blues’ undisputed starter. He kept the manager’s confidence in him by delivering consistent performances. Silva became a leader for them.

In the same season, they lifted the UEFA Champions League by defeating Manchester City. Although it can be said that their forwards had an extraordinary performance, nobody can deny that their defense was their main strength. Silva’s performance in his debut season was unthinkable. The Brazilian was the glue that held the Chelsea defense together.

Silva then had another stellar season at Stamford Bridge. His performance earned him a one-year contract renewal that he signed earlier this year.

Now at 38 years old, there are still no signings from Silva’s regression. He remains one of the best defenders in Europe and one of the fittest in the Chelsea squad.

The defender will also be part of the Brazil squad at the upcoming World Cup, which will surely be his last appearance on football’s biggest stage. Now there is a question: Will Silva continue to play even beyond the World Cup?

When asked about his future, the defender said that it was not the right time to talk about it. But he clearly gave an indication that things will depend on whether Chelsea gives him a new contract or not.

Now Silva has played even this season, a one-year deal for him is a no-brainer for Chelsea management. If Silva stays at Stamford Bridge beyond 2023, he will give Chelsea much more time to think about the Josko Gvardiol deal. They will have a whole new year to negotiate with the Leipzig board and see if Gvardiol really fits in at Chelsea or not.
