‘They’ll get ripped to shreds’ – Paul Merson warns Liverpool against repeating Rangers tactical trick

Paul Merson has warned Liverpool that “they will be torn to pieces” if they repeat the use of a two-man midfield used against Rangers in the Champions League.

The Merseysiders dominated in midfield after Jurgen Klopp’s tactical change favored a wide variety of attackers.

“Liverpool played four strikers against Rangers and dominated the game by securing a 2-0 win at Anfield,” the former Arsenal man wrote for Sportskeeda. “However, against Arsenal, I think they will be torn apart if they play Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara against the likes of Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard, as the Gunners trio have been in sublime form this season.

Their biggest test so far, however, will be upcoming Premier League games against league leaders and defending champions Manchester City.

Given the level of defensive stability we enjoyed at Anfield, it’s hard to see our German strategist opting to return to a flawed 4-3-3 at the Emirates.

Trent Alexander-Arnold may once again need to refrain from regularly riding his trademark runs down the right flank to help the back line, but we should still have more than enough creativity going forward.

The former Mainz boss has already suggested that he will keep faith with his new system for the time being and it is a decision that we at Empire of the Kop would gladly support as we seek to rediscover consistently positive performances and results.
