“They crossed the line”- Carragher speaks about Aston Villa fans’ chants

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher feels Aston Villa made the right decision in sacking Steven Gerrard, but felt the Birmingham club’s fans’ behavior towards their former manager crossed the line.

Gerrard was sacked last week following Villa’s 3-0 loss to Fulham and the loss was another in a poor start to the season for the club under the Liverpool legend’s watch.

The results, combined with the style of play that Gerrard imposed on his team, caused discontent among the Villa fans and this became evident after the match against Fulham.

Aston Villa fans began chanting songs like “Steven Gerrard, get out of our club” and “You’ll never work again” towards their manager and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes he’s gone overboard.

What did Carragher say about Gerrard’s Aston Villa sacking?

Speaking about Gerrard being sacked at Aston Villa, Carragher said on Monday Night Football: “I think it was the right decision.

“The crowd reaction was impossible. I think Stevie could have gone to the game on Sunday thanks to those chants and the discontent of the Aston Villa supporters.

“I’m not saying this because I’m a friend and I think fans who pay money and leave in the middle of the week are 100 percent allowed to voice their concerns and it hasn’t gone well for them.

“They have felt that it has been a bit boring and not exciting enough. I just felt like some of the chants at the end, and maybe because he’s my partner, I think they crossed the line a little bit.

“I can understand the frustration, but it was hard to watch.”
