The passing of the EPL queen

The EPL decided to postpone all matches until Monday out of respect for the Queen’s passing on Thursday. While there was no official vote on the decision, the league’s board of directors made the call during a meeting on Friday. Premier League clubs later agreed to the move.

“We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country,” said Richard Masters, chief executive of the Premier League. “As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy after a lifetime of dedication.”

“This is a tremendously sad time not only for the nation,” Masters continued. “But also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join all those who mourn her passing.”

EPL not only league affected by the death of La Reina

Along with Premier League games, all EFL and Women’s Super League games are also suspended. The decision also affects games in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Scottish FA chairman Rod Petrie has agreed to the postponement of matches after talks with his teammates in the box. “We spoke to our counterparts across the UK this morning and in discussions with our colleagues in the professional game in Scotland, it was agreed that this was the appropriate step to take following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” he said. “In the meantime, we will work with our clubs and partners to ensure the appropriate steps are taken during the grieving period.”

The UK government has previously stated that any decision to postpone events would be up to individual leagues or organisations.

With the cancellation in place until Monday, the next scheduled Premier League matches will resume on Friday 16 September. However, there are only two matches planned for that particular day. Aston Villa host Southampton, while Fulham travel to the Midlands to take on Nottingham Forest.
