The best and worst adverts involving Liverpool Football Club

As one of the biggest football clubs in the world, it’s no surprise that Liverpool always attract a lot of interest from the advertising world.

Major brands are often linked to successful sports teams in the hope that consumers will find them trustworthy. By advertising in sports like soccer, brands can increase awareness of their products and services, raising their hopes of increasing annual revenue.

The Reds have been featured in numerous commercials over the years, some good and some not so good. Read on as we take a look at the best and worst announcements involving Liverpool.

Paddy Power Casinos

Paddy Power is well known as a sports betting company and in more recent times has become a major player in the online casino industry.

However, they have also started to gain a reputation in the world of advertising. Whether that reputation is good or bad is certainly up for debate! The divisive nature of his advertising was never more apparent than in his 2016 campaign, in which he mocked Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp.

The billboard ad, which mocked Liverpool’s injury record under the German coach, sparked several complaints but he was later cleared by advertising watchdogs.

Nivea for men

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Joe Gomez starred in a cringe fest in 2018 when Nivea launched the UK’s first body shave line.

The ad opens with Oxlade-Chamberlain taking a shower which, for some strange reason, is broadcast live to the nation.

He begins to shave his chest, but cuts himself, drawing groans from the audience and his teammates. Fortunately, the new product from Nivea is available to save the day. With campy commentary from Clive Tyldesley and generally poor acting, this ad campaign is a prime candidate for the Room 101 treatment.

sonos

Sonos launched a new ad campaign earlier this year to celebrate the sounds and emotions football fans feel on game day.

Starring several Liverpool stars, including goalkeeper Alisson, the fast-paced ad captures the excitement of supporting the Reds at Anfield.

The firm also created a select Sonos radio station: Anfield Pre-Match Anthems. Presented by John Barnes, the music was chosen by the club’s first men’s and women’s teams. You’ll need to listen through the 75-minute playlist to find out if Barnes features his old Anfield Rap song.

carlsberg

Danish brewer Carlsberg released an eye-catching video in August 2022 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their successful partnership with Liverpool.

Featuring some of the most iconic moments from that period, the video gently takes fans by the hand on a trip down memory lane. Carlsberg also produced a range of special limited edition tins based on some of the club’s most iconic kits and bearing the names of various Liverpool legends.

In an era where longevity can be difficult to maintain, the connection between Carlsberg and Liverpool is a lesson in how things should be done.

erdinger

Klopp returned as a brand ambassador for Erdinger Weissbräu earlier this year in a new video for the brewery’s ‘Never Skim an Erdinger’ campaign.

In ‘Don’t Forget the Best Bit’, a wide-eyed young waiter serves Klopp his favorite beer. He then ponders whether he should brush the foam head. The bartender is stopped in his tracks by his colleague who implores him not to forget the best: the crucial last pour of foam from the bottle into the glass.

The video is snappy and to the point, though we’re not 100 percent sure if Klopp’s Peaky Blinders cap works for him.

Christmas Retail Trilogy

LFC Retail launched its Christmas 2022 campaign with a fun festive ad featuring Klopp and some of the club’s most legendary former stars.

Based at the AXA Training Center, it begins by showing the kitchen staff before moving on to Klopp pondering what to do himself as the World Cup takes place in Qatar.

His reflections are disturbed by noise coming from outside, generated by Ian Rush, John Aldridge and Chris Kirkland. The trio are enjoying a kick on festive bridges before the gardener interrupts their fun and orders them ‘off the field’.

The second installment in the trilogy continued the theme of quiet Christmas preparation and featured assistant manager Pep Lijnders and defender Joel Matip. The stadium announcer and club mascot also got a chance to shine in the middle segment of a series that will conclude with the release of the third video on December 16.
