Texas Longhorns head football coach Steve Sarkisian is no stranger to controversy and this time, he got into trouble with Longhorns fans. After Oklahoma State’s loss on Saturday, Sarkisian and several of his players left the field without singing “The Eyes of Texas,” going against a long-standing Longhorn tradition. Sarkisian later apologized and said it would not happen again.

Early departure from the field annoys fans

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is used to controversy. He was fired from his job at USC after a bizarre series of events that included being intoxicated at a booster event and leaving campus before practice started.

This is a bit tamer by comparison, but nonetheless a bit lukewarm with the Texas fans after Saturday’s game.

After the Longhorns’ loss to Oklahoma State, Sarkisian and several of his players walked off the field before singing ‘The Eyes of Texas’ as is tradition.

In a press conference on Monday, coach Sarkisian apologized to the ‘Longhorn Nation’ for what he called a ‘mistake’.

“I have an apology to the Longhorn Nation. I made a mistake late in the game by not singing ‘The Eyes of Texas’ when the game was over,” Sarkisian said. “That was not intentional. That was nothing to do with our players. I think our players just followed me up the ramp into the locker room.”

“That will never happen again,” he added.

There was much debate about whether or not the song would be sung after the games in 2020, at the time of George Floyd’s death. Students and athletes at the time called for it to be banned, but the school said players would not be forced to sing it. The university had her school’s investigative panel investigate the song and determined that it was “not racially intended”.

Sarkisian promised fans that he and the players would sing the song when he was hired. With a broken promise, Sark had better win again before the Texas fans turn on him even more.
