As Teófimo López prepares for his upcoming fight against Jamaine Ortiz, López speaks with members of the media about a number of topics, including that fight, Ryan García and his evolution as a person. Check out some quick excerpts of what he said below.
Teófimo López on Ryan García now aiming for a fight with Rolando Romero instead of Devin Haney
“That’s the Mayweather effect. You have to think of it as a business point. If he gets the world title, then he can balance the WBC with the WBA. But if you don’t have a belt, the Haneys will say you need more because they have the money belt.”
On his own interest in fighting García
“To be honest, I’m on a different route. I have my Takeover promotions going now with Top Rank and ESPN and I have a fighter there, ‘Lonnie B’ Thompson, so he was under Mayweather at one point, let’s try it out and see how we do with that and I really want to turn this into a Golden Boy franchise.”
On facing Jamaine Ortiz next
“Big fighter. He and I faced each other in the 2015 National Golden Gloves, in the final. So I know I have a tough fight ahead of me. It’s not easy, this guy is very elusive, he is a technician as they say. So he gave Loma a run for his money, so I had to stay on my toes.”
About what has changed in him lately
“My mentality. I took six months away from the boxing world to spend time with my son and that really punished me. So, when I return, it’s not that I miss boxing, I think boxing misses Teo and I’m here to do him that favor.”
