Teddy Atlas Feels Anthony Joshua Has Been an ‘Overrated Guy”

Hall of Fame trainer Teddy Atlas thinks two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is a bit overrated.

Joshua lost three of his last five fights.

He suffered the first loss of his career in June 2019, when Andy Ruiz stopped him in seven rounds. Six months later, he regained his world titles with a dominant decision over Ruiz in their rematch. He and then he retained the belts with a stoppage of Kubrat Pulev in 2020.

In 2021, Joshua was outpointed in twelve rounds by Oleksandr Usyk.

Last month in Saudi Arabia, the rematch saw Joshua do better, but he was unable to overcome the skills of Usyk, who retained the WBO, IBF, IBO and WBA heavyweight belts with a split decision.

Atlas isn’t too impressed with Joshua’s list of opponents. On the other hand, Atlas doesn’t dispute that Joshua is a box office superstar.

“With respect, fans in the UK love a good loser. [Joshua] he knocked out Charles Martin, who is not on anyone’s list of great fighters, to win the title. He has been an overrated guy,” Atlas said on his podcast.

“I can’t make it clearer or give you a better reason for it. Who has he beaten? I repeat, who has he beaten? She has lost and she has lost by knockout. All right, last two to Usyk, he got hurt, lost a decision, showed heart.

“But Ruiz knocked him out and took the fight at the last minute. I really think Joshua has always been overrated, but he can bring in a lot of money.”
