Manchester United are interested in Bayern Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong, and a summer transfer is looking increasingly likely.
That’s according to Sky Sports Germany, which reports that such a move “seems more and more apparent.”
The prowling defender has a contract with Leverkusen until 2025 but is open to a return to Manchester, having played for sky-blue rivals United in their youth academy.
Frimpong is currently on international duty as part of Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands team, but has yet to report.
The former United manager has opted for the experience and physique of Denzel Dumfries on the right side of his five defenders, despite their sub-par performances.
Dumfries has also been linked with Man United and is said to be available for around €60m, should the Red Devils want to move him away from Inter Milan.
However, Frimpong seems much more suited to Erik ten Hag’s style of football.
His willingness to push forward and provide an attacking threat makes him the anti-Aaron Wan-Bissaka, as the Crystal Palace man’s lack of skill in forward areas has seen him all but forgotten by his manager.
The 21-year-old Bundesliga player has scored five goals and provided two assists in fourteen league starts this season, outrageous numbers for a right-back.
He was also a game changer in Leverkusen’s Champions League group stage match against Atlético Madrid, coming off the bench twenty minutes from time to provide the two game-winning assists.
Sky is reporting that talks between Manchester United, Jeremie Frimpong and Bayern Leverkusen will accelerate after the World Cup, with change “imminent”.
The Bundesliga team is already looking for replacements for the defender.
With Diogo Dalot the only right-back currently trusted by Ten Hag and Wan-Bissaka and likely to leave United at the next opportunity, a January move cannot be ruled out at this stage.
