Spearing would be ‘very fortunate’ to emulate former Liverpool teammate

Jay Spearing took on the player/manager role at Liverpool’s academy and has been discussing how he took inspiration from his former teammate, Steven Gerrard.

Speaking to the club’s website, the 33-year-old said: “If I take a similar path as him, I would be very lucky.

“I will strive and work hard to achieve it. Right now, all I can do is focus on the journey and the opportunity that has been given to me. I will learn and see what comes.

“There is a lot of hard work ahead of us, but the ultimate goal is to get out into the big, wide world of professional gaming.

“Steven was one of the people who spread the message of saying ‘Good luck and learn’ after I was appointed.”

The Wirral-born midfielder hopes to land a senior managerial role, whenever this current deal comes to an end.

It’s not going to be an easy transition to becoming a manager and in the case of the current Aston Villa boss, his legacy in the game has certainly helped him get more head coaching opportunities.

For the former Tranmere Rovers player, his career has not been as successful and he will have to work much harder to have a chance.

Let’s hope to see an exciting and successful career begin in our academy and possibly one day end with the man who started in the 2012 FA Cup Final sitting on the bench at Anfield.

However, whatever happens, it’s great to hear that there is so much excitement for this role and so many fond memories of the relationship between two former midfielders.
