Sky: Juventus and Inter keeping tabs on Roma veteran Chris Smalling

This summer, Juventus will surely sign one or two new defenders who can bolster the ranks. With Leonardo Bonucci struggling to maintain form and Daniele Rugani unable to step up in quality, Max Allegri’s back line is in dire need of reinforcement.

Therefore, the Bianconeri could be looking for an experienced player who can partner with the likes of Gleison Bremer and Federico Gatti, and are apparently monitoring the situation in the Italian capital.

According to Sky Sport via TuttoJuve, Inter and Juventus are aware of Chris Smalling, who has an expiring contract.

Roma are currently trying to renew the signing of the defender, but it seems that both the Bianconeri and the Nerazzurri could take advantage of the situation by offering the player better conditions than the 3.5 million per season proposed by the Giallorossi.

The 33-year-old joined the Italian capital team in 2019 after a nine-year stint at Manchester United.

He has been a fundamental member of the Roma team ever since. This season, he has contributed to three goals in 15 Serie A appearances.

Juve FC says

To his credit, Smalling has been in splendid form in recent seasons, but investing in aging veterans hasn’t always paid off for Juventus.

Perhaps it wouldn’t hurt to add some experience to the department if Bonucci ends up leaving, but we’d also prefer Juventus invest in younger players who can act as mainstays for years to come.
