Serie A set for huge overhaul affecting less popular teams

In the coming seasons, Serie A could have fewer clubs and a planned meeting will discuss this suggestion.

When it comes to football leagues around the world, the Italian one is right up there with the best. The list is expected to include the Premier League, Ligue 1, Bundesliga and La Liga. In particular, there are currently 20 teams in Serie A, the Premier League and La Liga; however, that number could decrease.

More teams can now compete at a higher level thanks to the expansion of the format. However, the expanded competition structure has long been the subject of criticism.

Expanding the league to include additional clubs is sure to generate some significant benefits. Thanks to this, two more clubs will have the opportunity to play at the highest level of football.

The result is a more competitive and interesting league and excellent survival chances for the “smaller” clubs. However, a growing concern is the role of the major leagues in the already present problem of match congestion.

Some critics have claimed that poor quality clubs have invaded the division and that the four extra league games per season reduce the fitness of the players. This, in turn, drains teams’ energy, results in lower quality matches, and increases injuries.

The importance of players being physically fit is widely recognized in the football community due to the high volume of international and club tournaments.

Serie A will cut from 20 to 18 clubs

Informal discussions have begun in Italy about reducing the number of Serie A teams from 20 to 18. However, so far only the elite clubs have shown their support.

The Italian football organization and the country’s top division clubs have begun preliminary talks on reducing the league to 18 teams, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports.

Although discussions are still in their early stages, they have not covered the league’s reconfiguration. However, the conversation will no doubt gain momentum in the coming weeks. It will probably happen on January 26, when FIGC president Gabriele Gravina attends the next Lega Serie A meeting.

According to the source, Serie A should be reduced to 18 teams, as all the big Italian clubs agree. Supposedly, from the summer of 2025, the agenda will become busier with the introduction of a Club World Cup and a restructured Champions League.

Furthermore, the best teams in Serie A are said to have raised the fact that the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 each have 18 teams.

What do the Serie A changes mean for the less popular teams?

The problem is that the less popular clubs fear a more competitive fight for survival. They believe that a reduction in the number of teams will have a negative financial impact on all clubs, particularly when it comes to national television rights.

A minimum of fourteen clubs must vote in favor of a reduction in the number of Serie A teams. However, it is highly unlikely that a quorum will be reached soon, according to Football Italia.

The players would have it easier if there were fewer teams since there would be fewer games each year. However, this negative aspect is accompanied by a smaller number of higher positions. It adds difficulty for lower level clubs to achieve promotion to the higher level.

The outcome of this conference will affect the future of Serie A both in terms of structure and competition.
