Sean McComb is no longer on track to enjoy what would have been his fastest ring change since his first year as a pro.
BoxingScene.com has confirmed that the promising junior welterweight prospect has been forced to postpone a planned January 27 clash against former title challenger Anthony Yigit. Belfast’s McComb suffered an undisclosed injury and will no longer appear on the DAZN show from Ulster Hall in his hometown of Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The rest of the show will go ahead as planned. Local welterweight Lewis Crocker (18-0, 10KOs) will face Mexican spoiler José Félix in the night’s main event. The show will include the latest step in the journey of Frazer Clarke (7-0, 5KOs), who represented Great Britain at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics and is now a rising prospect at cruiserweight. Clarke will face Belfast’s Tommy McCarthy in a fight scheduled for ten rounds.
McComb would have returned to the ring just eight weeks after his dominant ten-round victory over Liverpool’s Sam Maxwell on a DAZN show on December 2 from the SSE Arena in Belfast. The victory was his seventh in a row since he suffered a seventh-round stoppage loss to Gavin Gwynne in their February 2021 meeting.
Last year marked the most productive of McComb’s career. He notched three wins, all against relevant opponents to prove his worth as a legitimate prospect on the verge of contention.
Boxing Scene has learned that there are plans to revisit a fight against Yigit (29-4-1, 10KOs) for McComb once he is fully healed.
Yigit’s career didn’t miss a beat. The 32-year-old southpaw was already scheduled to fight Friday and earned a six-round decision victory over Jamshid Nazari in his hometown of Stockholm, Sweden. The victory was his second in a row since a twelve-round loss to WBO lightweight mandatory challenger Denys Berinchyk (18-0, 9KOs) on August 26 in Wroclaw, Poland.
