Scottish Premiership – Weekend Roundup

It was a seismic weekend in the Scottish Premiership.

A four-all tie for last place and the sacking of a manager added to the drama after big wins for Ross County and Hibs.

Just 10 points separate 12th from 5th. With ten games remaining before the league splits, it’s still unclear who will complete the top 6 and who will fight for survival in the bottom 6.

The lower two trading places

Bottom of the table Ross County scored three goals over Kilmarnock to set up a four-all tie for last place.

The win knocked the Staggies out of the bottom on goal difference, with Killie now at the bottom of the table. Kilmarnock remain the only team to have recorded an away win this season.

Dundee Utd and Motherwell, who share last place on 20 points, have one game to play. St Mirren beat Motherwell to move into the top half of the table, pushing Aberdeen down to seventh.

Aberdeen depression deepens

Last Monday, Aberdeen suffered what has to be one of the most humiliating defeats in the long history of the Scottish Cup. Darvel, who plays in the Scottish sixth division, stunned the Premiership side 1-0.

The humiliation continued as Hibs outscored Aberdeen with six, including a Josh Campbell hat-trick. Minutes after the match, the sacking of Jim Goodwin was announced, leaving Aberdeen seventh and now without a manager.

Last season was the first time Aberdeen had finished outside the top 4 since 2014. Now they find themselves in the bottom half of the table again. They have a 9-point cushion over the four teams tied for last place, but if this dismal form doesn’t change soon, they may find themselves fighting for survival in the top tier.

Although they have finished bottom of the league before, they were saved from relegation both times. Whoever takes the big job next has a lot of work to do to get the team up and running again.

The best four in action

Elsewhere, he was “as was” in the top four at the end of the weekend’s games. Celtic and Rangers won their games 2-0, with Livingston and Hearts sharing a point each in the only draw of the weekend.

Rangers remain 9 points behind league leaders Celtic. Even with 15 games left, it’s the title Celtic must lose.
