Former England international and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney responded to Harry Kane by leveling his record and status as England’s all-time top goalscorer.
Rooney set the record at 53, which Kane broke today following his penalty against France.
The Tottenham Hotspur striker had a golden opportunity to make it 54, but unfortunately saw his penalty kick fly over the bar.
England withdrew from the 2022 World Cup after an impressive campaign in which they were one of the highest scoring nations and went unbeaten until the quarter-finals.
It is now the third straight tournament in which they have come painfully close to a taste of glory after reaching the World Cup semi-final in 2018, the Euro 2020 final and now the quarter-finals.
Hopefully Kane will see the bright side of the night though, after etching his name in the Three Lions history books. He is considered one of the most prolific goalscorers in world football and will maintain that status regardless of his missed penalty tonight.

Absolutely gutted for the guys but proud of the way they have played this tournament and they should be proud. Congrats to @HKane on matching the record, he’ll be on his own soon and couldn’t think of anyone better to take over. Keep your head up Harry ????????? @England
