Romano provides update on ‘Liverpool links’ with £86 million midfielder

Liverpool were linked with countless midfielders in the closing days of the transfer window and links with one of the rumored players have been discussed by Fabrizio Romano.

Writing for CaughtOffside, the Italian journalist said: “I have no updates on Valverde, despite links to Liverpool. They told me that they wanted an opportunity and not a top-tier player at the end of the market, as they will focus on a new midfielder in 2023.

Real Madrid never wanted to talk about Valverde’s departure because they already lost Casemiro.

It appears that we were willing to bid up to £86m for Federico Valverde, but the deal could not be completed in the final days of the transfer window.

There was obviously a conscious decision to settle for Arthur Melo and apparently go big next summer, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens with potential deals going forward.

For now, we have signed one player on loan and we have 10 players who can play in the middle of the park for Jurgen Klopp this campaign and that should be more than enough.

Decisions will have to be made on the likes of James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita in due course, but it looks like we’re happy to hit the market next year.

Whether it’s Jude Bellingham, another player or several, interest in the 24-year-old Uruguayan could reignite next year as well.
