AS Roma scored two late goals at the San Siro to salvage a 2-2 draw against defending champions AC Milan on Sunday night.
The visiting team didn’t have a shot on goal until the 87th minute, but Roger Ibáñez and Tammy Abraham scored late to deal Milan a heavy blow in their quest to retain the title.
Champions the better side
The defending champions were by far the best team of the night playing in front of their vociferous fans as Roma barely settled into the game.
Pierre Kalulu put the hosts ahead with a diving header on 30 minutes that Roma keeper Rui Patricio reached in with a hand but was unable to avoid.
Milan tested Roma on several occasions and would have been disappointed not to go into halftime with a bigger lead, as Olivier Giroud and Brahim Díaz had chances on goal.
Milan dominated after the break with Rafael Leao firing from a difficult angle while Patricio somehow managed to avoid Theo Hernandez’s long-range shot using his chest.
Alexis Saelemaekers then saw a penalty disallowed by the referee minutes after Giroud fired his header straight at Patricio.
The Rossoneri scored their second of the night when substitute Tomasso Pobega swept home a brilliant team play inside the penalty area from 12 yards.
Ten minutes later, Ibáñez gave Roma a lifeline and headed free from a Lorenzo Pellegrini corner.
This was the visiting team’s first shot on goal of the match. The Giallorossi then equalized right at death when Abraham reacted quicker to fire on the rebound after Nemanja Matic’s header was saved at point-blank range by Milan goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu.
Milan Naples route
The result means Milan are third in the table tied with Juventus on points, but 7 points behind league leaders Napoli, which beat Sampdoria 2-0 on Sunday.
On the result, Milan manager Stefan Pioli said: “It’s a great shame to come out of this game with only one point, that’s for sure. After a game like this, we tell the players that we have to keep playing like this, but that the games end in the 95th minute and we have to be focused all the time”.
“If you concede two goals from set pieces, where we knew our opponents were very strong, that means more concentration was needed. It’s difficult to talk to the team at the moment, as we played well and until the 87th minute we deserved to win, but then we made life difficult for ourselves”.
