Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand and former Liverpool striker Michael Owen have agreed the Reds need to bring in more reinforcements to get back into the title race.
Liverpool have had a reverse start to the season. The Reds have won just two of their first eight English Premier League games this season. With ten points from eight games, Jurgen Klopp’s team is currently in tenth position in the table.
The Reds have been very dominant in the recent past. But this season’s performance has raised many questions. Liverpool suffered a painful defeat in their last EPL match against Arsenal, which only made the questions louder.
They struck some critics by recording a huge 7-1 victory last night. Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick for the Reds while Roberto Firmino scored a brace. The other two goals were scored by Darwin Núñez and Harvey Eliott.
Ferdinand and Owen want Liverpool to bring more players
Now, despite this great victory, many experts believe that not much has changed. At the beginning of summer, Jurgen Klopp’s team signed Darwin Núñez and Fabio Carvalho. Both players got off to a hot and cold start to their Liverpool careers.
But despite these innings, Liverpool teams have found themselves deadlocked on quite a few occasions. They failed to score goals in important moments and conceded too many times. This has forced Klopp to modify his system and even after that, they are still dominant as in the last few seasons.
This problem can only be solved with more tickets and Liverpool will have to show determination again in the transfer market.
Speaking of the same, Ferdinand thinks Liverpool should look to sign more players, but refrain from spending carelessly.
“They don’t go out and gamble on the transfer market and I think they have to stick to that,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
The former United defender further added: “But they do need to bring in new players.”
Meanwhile, former Liverpool player Michael Owen pointed to the fact that Liverpool’s core is aging by the day. Most of their best players are now in their 30s and will need younger replacements sooner or later.
“The concern for Liverpool is that a lot of their best players are their elders,” said Michael Owen.
Actually, Liverpool are buying a lot of young players in recent years. Aside from Nunez and Carvalho, the Reds signed young prospects like Luis Diaz and Ibrahima Konate in previous windows.
They are currently monitoring many interesting youngsters such as Jude Bellingham and Matheus Nunes for a possible transfer to Anfield. But now the moment demands that Liverpool management add more youngsters and give Klopp something new to work with.
