Real Madrid Dominate L’Équipe’s 2022 Team of the Year

French newspaper L’Équipe has announced its 2022 Team of the Year, and Real Madrid have more players in the XI than any other team.

L’Équipe’s 2022 Team of the Year has Real Madrid and Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois between the sticks. The 30-year-old’s impressive form with Real Madrid has earned him a place in the XI.

Virgil Van Dijk and Josko Gvardiol form the central pair in L’Équipe’s 2022 Team of the Year. Gvardiola has been impressive for RB Leipzig and Croatia and was among the most impressive players at the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Van Dijk’s performance for Liverpool and the Netherlands also sees him find a place in the XI.

It is Kyle Walker who has made L’Équipe’s 2022 Team of the Year as a right-back. Walker plays for Manchester City and the England national soccer team and is an important player for both sides. On the other flank is Italy international Theo Hernandez, who has been impressive for AC Milan.

In the four-man midfield of L’Équipe’s 2022 Team of the Year, former teammates Casemiro and Luka Modric form the central midfield pairing. Casemiro and Luka Modric were teammates at Real Madrid before the former left the Spanish club to join Manchester United in the summer of 2022.

Both Casemiro and Luka Modric were also impressive at the FIFA World Cup for their respective nations.

On the right side of midfield is Lionel Messi, who has been stellar for PSG and Argentina. After a rather disappointing first season with PSG in the 21/22 season, Messi has looked back at his best level in the current 22/23 season. He was also key for Argentina as they lifted the 2022 FIFA World Cup title.

On the left side of midfield is Kevin de Bruyne. Although he and Belgium had a rather disappointing campaign in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, his performances for Manchester City earn him a place in the XI.

Kylian Mbappé is one of the two strikers in the XI. The Frenchman has been impressive for PSG and France. He and France came close to winning the FIFA World Cup title for the second time in a row in Qatar 2022, but fell at the last hurdle. He is joined in attack by his compatriot and current Ballon d’Or winner and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.
