Previewing Chelsea at the World Cup – Talk Chelsea

The 2022 World Cup kicks off on Sunday with Qatar taking on Ecuador at 4pm UK time.

England’s first game is Monday at 10:00 British time against Iran.

There will be plenty of Chelsea involvement in the World Cup, of course, let’s take a look at each one here:

Denis Zakaria (Switzerland)

A chance to play some more necessary games for Zakaria. He has started to come into the fold at Chelsea now and could use a boost as he started to look good.

Thiago Silva (Brazil)

Of course, Brazil was always going to choose Thiago, and he will be just as important to their campaign as he is to Chelsea this season. Still in decent shape going into this.

Judge Ziyech (Morocco)

He will welcome any playing time he can get as he rarely plays for Chelsea these days. It will also be a showcase moment for him with the expectation that he will probably leave Chelsea very soon.

Christian Pulisic (United States)

He always seems to play better for the US, and he will face some of his Chelsea teammates in England. He too could use some more minutes and a goal or two will really help.

Kai Havertz (Germany)

Poor form going into this, but another player who plays better for country than club. Now he needs good form and good matches under his belt.

Conor Gallagher (England)

Surprising addition to the England squad really. I’d be surprised if he gets a lot of playing time, if anything.

Mason Mount (England)

He also needs to improve his form and I think he will count his lucky stars if he starts against Iran, but I hope he does.

Raheem Sterling (England)

Like Mount, he doesn’t really deserve to start recently, but I expect him to start anyway.

Mateo Kovacic (Croatia)

Chelsea just hopes that he, and everyone else, returns injury-free after recently playing through a knee injury.

Cesar Azpilicueta (Spain)

Spain continue to trust the Chelsea captain and I hope he will play an important role in their campaign.

Edouard Mendy (Senegal)

He needs a good streak of games to have confidence.

Same with Mendy, Mount, Sterling and others, to be honest. Poor form of late and perhaps this can give him the kick needed to get back to the form we know he can produce when he returns to Chelsea.

Romelu Lukaku (Belgium)

On loan at Inter Milan from Chelsea, but I doubt many Chelsea eyes are on him!

Ethan Ampadu (Wales)

He will be much watched by Chelsea and Blues fans alike as he is having a decent season on loan.

Baba Rahman (Ghana)

Surprised to see him go to the World Cup, but to be honest I don’t think he has a future at Chelsea anyway.

Let’s pray that there are no serious injuries!
