Portugal’s Jose Mourinho backup plan for national football team manager role

The Portugal national soccer team reportedly has a backup plan in case they fail to reach an agreement with José Mourinho to become their new manager.

The position of current manager Fernando Santos has come into question after Portugal did not perform well at the 2022 FIFA World Cup despite boasting a star-studded squad.

Portugal advanced to the round of 16 after finishing top of the points table in Group H. They earned a 6–1 victory over Switzerland in the round of 16, producing arguably the best performance of any team in the World Cup FIFA 2022.

However, the EURO 2016 winners failed to advance beyond the quarter-finals, where they met Morocco. The African nation stunned Portugal in the quarterfinals as Morocco inflicted a 1-0 defeat on the European heavyweights to knock them out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Fernando Santos continues to occupy his position as coach of the Portugal soccer team. A decision regarding his position has not yet been made, but it is expected to be made soon.

Reports have said that Portugal is ready to part ways with Fernando Santos and current AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho is the favorite to become the new manager of the Portugal national soccer team.

Reports have also said that Portugal could look to offer José Mourinho the role of coach of the national soccer team while he remains in his post as head coach of AS Roma.

Portugal also have a backup plan in case the decision to appoint José Mourinho as their manager does not materialise. According to UOL’s Bruno Andrade, current Portugal under-21 manager Rui Jorge could be promoted to take over the national soccer team if they can’t reach an agreement with one or two big names.

Rui Jorge, who is also a former Portugal international, has been the Portugal Under-21 coach since November 2010. He has held that position for more than a decade.

In the meantime, it will be interesting to see what the Portuguese FA decides on whether to stay with Fernando Santos or part ways with him, with whom the country won the EURO 2016 and 2019 UEFA Nations League titles.
