Peter Crouch makes honest Nunez claim after missing ‘gilt-edged chance’ v Ajax

Peter Crouch has claimed that Darwin Núñez is “in the best place in the world” to find confidence after a rocky start at Anfield.

The Uruguayan international was once again on the scoresheet for Jurgen Klopp’s men by doubling the lead after Mo Salah’s superb opening goal.

“Listen, you’re asking the right man. I went through a well-documented drought when I first went to Liverpool,” the former Reds striker told BT Sport.

“He is in the best place in the world. If he is struggling, maybe due to a lack of confidence at times, the fans will always be behind him.

“There are plenty of other fans who are so quick to attack a forward that costs that kind of money.”

Four starts and four goals in each of the ties in question show that the 23-year-old has adjusted well to life on Merseyside, as evidenced by his reaction to a missed golden opportunity before the half-time break.

“The best thing about tonight was that he missed a big chance, let’s be honest, and then he came back and scored a fantastic header,” Crouch added. “He obviously is working hard for the team and he will get his reward.”

We’ve got some frustrating flaws from the former Benfica hit man that, frankly, he should have easily hidden.

That said, Crouch is right to point to Nunez’s growing resistance to setbacks, a stark contrast to his behavior earlier in the season.

Add a bit of confidence to his game and time with Klopp’s side and we have no doubt our £64million man will further hone that ruthless side of his and catch up on the domestic and international scoring charts.
