Pelé health condition worsens; spending Christmas in hospital

The legendary Brazilian striker Pelé has seen his health worsen in recent days. The 82-year-old former player is dealing with cancer and the disease appears to be advancing.

Pelé was previously diagnosed with colon cancer in September 2021. While there was some good news about his condition earlier in the year, he has since returned to hospital since November 29. The hospital issued a statement on Wednesday updating the public on Pelé’s condition.

“Edson Arantes do Nascimento presents progression of the oncological disease and requires greater care related to renal and cardiac dysfunctions,” the doctors said. “The patient remains hospitalized in a common room, under the necessary care of the medical team.”

End-of-life care started earlier this month

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Pelé would receive end-of-life care at the Brazilian hospital. Basically, this meant that there would be no more invasive surgeries or intense treatments for the soccer superstar. Following the announcement, Pelé issued an optimistic statement on his official Instagram.

“Friends, I want to keep everyone calm and positive thoughts,” Pele said. “I am strong, with high hopes and following my treatment as always. I want to thank the entire medical and nursing team for all the zeal I have been receiving.”

Pelé’s state of health forces him to hospitalize Christmas

However, as Pelé’s condition continues to worsen, he will now remain in hospital until Christmas. Kely Nascimento, Pelé’s daughter, revealed on Instagram that the family will spend the holidays at the hospital surrounding Pelé.

“Our Christmas at home has been called off,” said the daughter of the legend. “We decided with the doctors that, for various reasons, we would be better off staying here with all the care this new family at Einstein is giving us!”

“As always, we thank you for all the love you show us here in Brazil and around the world!”

Pelé won three World Cup titles with Brazil throughout his illustrious career. His first win came in 1958 when he was just 17 years old.
