Paul Robinson says Patrick Bamford made ‘the most of it’ during Gabriel incident

Former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes the referee made the correct decision to overturn Gabriel’s red card as there was “minimal” contact from the Arsenal defender.

Leeds suffered a heavy defeat in a highly controversial match at Elland Road in which Patrick Bamford missed a penalty and the referee disallowed another penalty and a red card for the Arsenal centre-back.

“I think the referee got it right, in all honesty,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

“We had a 40 minute delay due to a power outage and that showed us how much we trust the technology from the number of times it was used in that game.

“There were a lot of decisions that were potentially wrong because he overrode decisions that he didn’t see on the field without the use of technology.

“It was vitally important that we had that for the last incident as I think it was a foul by Patrick.

“He pushes Gabriel, so what the referee has done is treat him in two batches. He has looked at the initial incident that was Patrick on Gabriel, which was a foul. And then he looked at the incident where he expelled Patrick.

“Yes, they kicked him out but the contact was minimal. She noticed that there was hardly any contact there and Patrick took great advantage of it.

“It wasn’t an expulsion so both ways the referee was right. I think the referee handled the game very well.” Robinson said.
