Paul Merson says Alexander Isak has major Newcastle United weakness

Despite rescuing his team a point against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, former Arsenal midfielder turned pundit Paul Merson has managed to identify a weakness in Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak’s play.

Hosting Bournemouth on Saturday, Newcastle United would have felt confident they could have picked up all three points, especially considering they are unbeaten at home so far this season.

However, the Toon fell behind in the second half. Industrious midfielder Phillip Billing gave the Cherries the lead on the hour of play.

However, after touching the ball inside the Magpies box just a few minutes later, the south coast team took a penalty that record signing Isak beat past rival goalkeeper Neto.

Despite Eddie Howe’s Geordies dominating possession after equalizing, the North East giants failed to score a second and the game ended 1-1, and Merson not only believes Bournemouth defended well, but also thinks Isak is a better player when his team is against the wall.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, as quoted by the Chronicle, Merson suggested playing at home may not suit Isak’s style of play.

“I didn’t see him too much, they (Bournemouth) defended him very well. You know, it’s hard. Sometimes it’s hard (for a striker),” Merson said.

“You need that grass behind the defense and it wasn’t there for him. He’s very fast (and) that was overturned, Bournemouth.

“They just sat down and put 10 behind the ball. (There wasn’t) much space between the goalkeeper and the four behind. I had nowhere to go.

“When it’s like this, it’s going to be difficult. I think he will enjoy it much more away from home.”
