Paramount+ may have to pay more for Serie A rights in future

Series A is reportedly looking to significantly increase international broadcast revenue in the coming years through future rights. In fact, Reuters claims that the Italian league wants to triple its current revenue in this area by 2030.

The Italian top flight recently took in some $657 million in TV rights outside the country between 2021 and 2024. While this is certainly a big change, it doesn’t exactly compare to other major European leagues. For example, the English Premier League reportedly generated nine times this amount over a similar period of time.

Paramount+, through CBS Sports, currently owns the broadcast rights to the Series A games in the United States. The three-year deal runs through 2024. It reportedly cost the company around $220 million.

Earlier this year, Series A opened offices in New York City. The move is an attempt to help grow the league here in the United States. Officials are also allegedly watching similar developments in London and Abu Dhabi.

The rights of the future Series A rise in price

Luigi De Siervo, the league’s chief executive, reportedly claimed that international broadcast packages could top $1 billion during the next round of negotiations. He also expects that these figures could approach $2 billion for the 2027-2030 cycle.

Domestically, Serie A officials could see an increase in TV revenue. With the current $2.9 billion rights package due in 2024, the league expects to increase these numbers to around $3.2 billion for the next period. These revenues are likely to reach $3.4 billion between 2027 and 2030.

Reuters also reports that Series A could potentially create a new company with sole responsibility for handling these broadcast negotiations. Similar movements have already taken place in LaLiga in Spain and Ligue 1 in France. This opens the door for private companies looking to invest in the development of the league.

The Italian league tried to negotiate a similar deal last year; however, some clubs opposed the idea. However, there will be a meeting with all the Serie A clubs on Friday to discuss these broadcast plans.
