Niners star not ruling out retirement following “Grueling season”

Having lost the championship game to the Eagles last weekend, 49ers star left tackle Trent Williams is considering retirement after another “grueling season” in San Francisco.

Williams was forced to leave San Francisco in a boot and crutches Tuesday while cleaning out his locker after a loss to the Eagles in Sunday’s NFC Championship game.

Although Williams said the injury to his foot is “minor” and not worrisome, the 34-year-old also spoke to the media as he left the locker room on Tuesday, saying retirement could be on the cards after another grueling year. .

“It’s a long season, with two long seasons in a row, it gets pretty exhausting for a 34-year-old guy like me.

“You think about what life is like after football, because I’ve done this every year of my life since second grade. You get to that age, especially after ending the year like this and being as exhausting as it was and still not getting to where you want to be. I get it, you get to that age. Honestly, I’m taking it one day at a time and we’ll see how it goes.”

Williams’ retirement would not only be a huge loss for the 49ers but also for the NFL, as the All-Pro left tackle remains among the best defensive players in the league despite his old age.

“It’s not hard to get up for the NFC Championship. [Game], or playoffs or something like that. But, yes, the daily grind becomes quite redundant. [after] doing it for a long time.

“But I am blessed. I am lucky to have played this game for so long. And whatever God has in the future for me, I know I will have it. But to answer your question, yes, it almost feels a bit like a repeat.”

The 49ers will have to keep busy in the offseason if Williams retires, already facing the loss of right tackle Mike McGlinchey to free agency.
