Newcastle defender Sven Botman was unhappy after Louis van Gaal dropped him from the senior squad.
The 22-year-old decided to snub the Under-21 squad and will stay at Newcastle during the international break to train with the remaining players.
Dutch Under-21 coach Erwin van de Looi admitted he was unhappy with the player’s decision to turn down the international call-up.
Speaking to Voetbal International, he said: “I had telephone contact with Sven. We have talked about it. Of course I accept his decision, but I don’t understand it. It’s everyone’s free choice to come here, but I was disappointed in that announcement, that’s for sure.”
Botman joined Newcastle this summer in a €37m deal from Lille but has only started four times for his club as he is still adjusting to Premier League football.
