Mikaela Mayer says doping in boxing ‘too easy to get away with’

Mikaela Mayer questioned the legacy of former opponent Alycia Baumgardner and called for consistency in boxing to curb doping.

Baumgardner tested positive in a pair of fights after defeating Mayer in a unified super featherweight title clash. Mayer has admitted that he was a tough pill to swallow after losing by the slimmest of margins in a split decision.

After fifteen months, Baumgardner has still not been cleared of any crime, having made her own “scientific evidence” public.

Mayer says the entire system of preventing athletes from using banned substances needs an overhaul. When she was asked directly if Baumgardner was clean, the American was unequivocal in her response.

“No, absolutely not, if you look at what tested positive,” Mayer began in conversation with Marco Villegas of Fight Hub TV.

“I always thought she looked extremely torn and people always told me she was on something. But I said, ‘She’s a Christian and she loves God.’ She wouldn’t do something like that.

“Behold [she tests positive]. But what tested positive were not minimal traces that could be cross contamination. Those are some pretty high testosterone levels, so I’m not sure why she carries on like nothing happened and she’s a clean athlete.

“Then he did his own test. But how can someone get cleared by doing their own testing in their own lab and then get cleared?

“She tested her hair just over three months after the test and it stayed in her hair for three months.

“The problem is the governing bodies, the commissions and all those who should have stripped it away.” [of her world titles]. There needs to be more consistency among athletes who don’t follow the rules. Otherwise, what’s the point?

“We were supposed to be in the Clean Boxing Program, but no one came to test me. “We didn’t get tested until after the fight.”

Next up for Mayer is the January 20 clash with Natasha Jonas in Liverpool. The 33-year-old is aiming to become a two-weight world champion at the M&S Bank Arena.

However, Mayer is still waiting for a knock on the door with just a short time left until fight night.

“Even for this fight [against Jonas], I have not been tested once. I kept asking and asking about it, and I was the one pushing for it. It’s too easy to get away with it. The coherence is not there.

“There should be more consistency in testing and more randomized testing.”

“His entire legacy is in question because we don’t know when he started doing that. For me, she has lost all credibility.”
