Michael Conlan has yet to make definitive retirement decisions

The gloves are still free, Michael Conlan has not yet retired.

Calling it a day seemed to become a distinct possibility after the Irish boxing great suffered a surprise defeat to Jordan Gill in Belfast on December 2.

The opposite, a third knockout loss, some suggested was too much to recover from. The fact that Conlan had admitted that he had to fight to free himself from the clutches of retirement after losing the world title to Luis Alberto López last summer also influenced the left narrative of the exit stage, as did the news that will manage Kevin Cronin’s career in the future.

However, an official announcement has yet to be made regarding the Olympic medal winner’s wrestling future. Ireland’s only men’s World Championship gold medal winner has yet to give any indication and his brother Jamie Conlan told the Irish News that no decision has yet been made.

Speaking just hours after the December defeat, Conlan said: “Congratulations to Jordan Gill who came out victorious tonight. Belfast, as always, thank you from the bottom of my heart for once again presenting your numbers.”

Speaking at the time, Eddie Hearn said: “It’s a fighter’s decision, but it’s very difficult to recover from that because he’s a guy who wants to compete for world titles.

“He has lost world titles, which is always fair, but now, if he is defeated again, it will be very difficult to come back.”
